Climbing Malarayat with the BBC

Alamid Coffee has always been in the limelight ever since Basil and Vie Reyes of Alamid Café Xpress accidentally discovered its unique taste for themselves. Since the couple delivered their first batch of Alamid Coffee it has been featured in National Geographic Channel, The New York Times, and of course the BBC among many other international and local media channels.

Over a cup of coffee

People ask me what I do, and I never quite know how to answer the question. I tell them that I write stuff and that sometimes I come up with ideas, but then they ask me where I work, and once again I fumble with the reply.

It’s true that I do indeed write stories for magazines and I create concepts for my work as a creative-type dude, but it’s hard to explain that I usually do all these things at eight thousand feet on the side of a mountain; while trying to keep my tent from being torn to shreds by an eighty-kilometer per hour gust of wind. It’s an understatement to say that I dislike offices, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to work while staying away from cubicles and artificial lighting.

The only time I ever spend inside a box of concrete and glass is when I step indoors to buy a cup of coffee from a café so that I have something to drink while planning my next adventure. In fact, every adventure that I have ever gone on started with a cup of coffee. That time for example, my brother and I fell into a ravine on Mt. Halcon in a middle of a July storm, we plotted every detail over a cup of cappuccino. That time I rode my bike into a waist-deep sea-surge in Romblon Island, I planned with a caffeine-addled brain, courtesy of a curiously strong cup of black coffee in Magdiwang port. Coffee has nothing to do with my misfortune, it just plays a part in making me believe in myself, a little bit too much. It is the unique quality of coffee to wake up the mind and provide an extra boost of energy to lift your leg over that last bit of rock before a flash flood sweeps you away into oblivion that makes it such an indispensable companion when putting your luck to the test. I’m not sure if there is any truth to that, but so far it has worked for me.

Last week I went climbing with Alamid Café Xpress to give BBC Television a tour of where the famous Alamid Coffee (Civet Coffee) comes from. This week, we’re making plans to go to Mt. Pulag in Northern Luzon where temperatures normally dip to hypothermic levels, next will be Mt. Halcon in Mindoro to get in touch with the indigenous Mangyans who live there. All of this is work-related of course, I’m climbing with Alamid Café Xpress after all, and the best part is we’re plotting all this adventure mayhem over a steaming cup of Alamid Coffee. Talk to you guys again soon, I have to get back to work!
